Introducing Cyberspace[]
Following the intro, we are introduced to the universe that is cyberspace - its numerous landmarks, as well as some of its inhabitants, the cybermessengers. We focus on one cybermessenger of interest, Twipsy, as he travels along the cyberhighways, package in hand. During his travels, he diverts towards another section of the highway - a tunnel heading along towards one of the numerous nodes in cyberspace.
As Twipsy enters the node, to begin his brisk walk along the connecting tunnels, he is stalked by the nefarious Data-Eater, eyeing his package - his potential lunch. Twipsy finally realises the Data-Eater’s presence and in a fright, dashes off trying to protect his package. A chase scene ensues. Twipsy takes advantage of every turn to escape the Data-Eater, but comes across a dead end... a ruptured tunnel, and below it, a black void vortex. Twipsy almost trips over, but doesn’t fall off the verge of the broken tunnel floor. But he loses his package down the black void.
HE-EEEEELP!
Introducing the Real World[]
Meanwhile, in the real world, we are introduced to the neighbourhood, and in turn, the Walker’s household. In the corridor, Dr. Walker and her husband Stan Walker, are preparing to leave the house; Dr. Walker brushes her hair in front of the corridor mirror. However while Stan puts on his coat, he begins to have second thoughts...
Well, I’ll call and say we can’t go, because... uh, the baby’s sick.
Oh Stan... we don’t have a baby. We have two kids who are old enough to babysit for themselves.
What if alien beings kidnapped them?!
They have the phone number at the restaurant. They can call us from the spaceship. Now let’s go.
Reassuring her husband all will be well, Dr. Walker gently ushers Stan to the front door, ready to leave.
The Black Void[]
However, as Twipsy laments over the lost package, the Data Eater has stalked the terrified cybermessenger.
So... little messenger, the meal that got away... bye-bye!
For your information, Data Eater, that was not lunch! That was top secret information I was supposed to deliver!
Oh, Mr Important...!
After mocking the worried cybermessenger, the Data Eater shows Twipsy the Black Void, radiating below the ruptured tunnel...
Nothing that goes down a black void ever comes back up...
And we get a glimpse deeper and deeper into the black void...
Another World?[]
However the scene transitions to a closeup of the computer monitor, belonging to the desktop computer of 13 year old youth, Nick Walker. However, at his desk working on the computer and noticing what’s playing on the monitor, is his neighbour Albert Barkhorn.
I thought you said this was a game!
I don’t know what’s happening here! It looks like a whole other world!
I like the one I’m in, thankyou.
Of course, as Albert keeps checking the program, Nick is playing with a basketball to while away time. Near him is his dog, Champ, currently asleep, wheezing as she snores. Just to mess with him, Nick attempts a basketball throw, which hits Albert, distracting him from his work. Finding another way to while away time, Nick switches on his boom box (upbeat music plays), and proceeds to get Champ to wake up from her nap, throwing a tennis ball towards her.
Champ, fetch!
His efforts appear, well... futile.
Play ball! Rise and shine! Up and at ‘em! Who wants a big bone?
Persuading Champ to wake up from her nap, Nick attempts picking her up, however, Albert becomes a little worried...
Don’t wake her! She’ll bite me!
Get real, Albert! She’s haven’t had any teeth in years!
Poor Albert, already worried, he even cowers and hides behind Nick’s desk chair, as Nick decides to hone his shot with the archer’s bow, armed with the suction cup arrow. He misses the archer’s target pinned on his bedroom wall near his desk.
Lissie Walker, with drink in hand, walks in on Nick getting on Albert’s nerves.
Nick, my computer broke. Can I-?
Nope, using it.
To throw your dirty t-shirts on?
Nick just shrugs it off.
Haha! Albert and I are playing a game he made up! He thinks he’s discovered some new world or something.
Albert fortunately comes out of hiding.
Later I told my Mom I’d be home to take my allergy medication.
Curious at what the two boys are working on at Nick’s computer, Lissie approaches them, ready to ask.
Let’s play!
No way! You’re too young!
Champ, oblivious to the situation unfolding, is still asleep as usual. Albert continues his work on the computer. Lissie barges in and snatches the keyboard to play with it.
Where’s the weird creature? Let me see!
Nick, already playing with his paddleball, also barges in and messes around the keyboard.
No, me first! It’s my room!
Albert tries to defuse the sibling rivalry, but to no avail.
Excuse me, but I’m the one who invented the game that opened up this world!
So you should let other people see it, then!
Now both siblings have their hands tightly gripped on the keyboard, trying to snatch it from each other.
...like me!
May I remind you that I can dis-enable the program!
Irritated by the sibling fight, Albert snatches the keyboard off of Nick. Lissie has one more ace in her sleeve...
Champ, I know you’re a hundred years old and can’t even bark anymore, but... sic ‘em!
Roused from her nap, Champ slowly gets up off the floor, and slowly walks towards Nick’s desk. Albert becomes worried, and Lissie pounces on the opportunity to snatch the keyboard back. But first, to pick up her drink off the computer monitor. As both Nick and Albert quarrel over the keyboard, she finishes her drink, watching it happen. All this while Champ creeps up towards the power board below the desk. Lissie is caught off guard by an accidental hit from the paddle ball.
Oww!
Champ nudged the power board with her paw, causing it to frazzle and short out, and Lissie loses her grip on the drink, saturating the keyboard and causing Albert to flinch. The keyboard to begins to short, and the lights go out. Now it’s dark...
Power Outage[]
Nick! Do something!
Help! My arm! Champ bit me! I’m dying...! Help! Champ! Down vicious...dog!
The lights come back on, and comedically Albert’s gotten his arm caught in the desk drawer. Champ is far away from the desk thankfully. Of course, Lissie isn’t at all impressed with Albert’s flinching.
Albert, you have more imagination than I thought.
Suddenly, the phone rings. Lissie decides to have Nick answer the phone.
Nick, you get it.
No response. Was Nick nowhere to be seen?
Nick?
Where is Nick?
Whatever Happened to Nick?[]
Nick Walker has now ended up in a whole different universe, falling down a mysterious tunnel dotted with asterisks, hashes and @ whorls. In fact the falling sensation and tossing and turning is all too much for Nick as he falls down to what appears to be a collection of numerous highways, covered in binary data, before landing on the kerb with a thud. He manages to sit himself up, just as what appears to be a whirlwind is leaving his presence.
Albert? Lissie?
They are nowhere to be seen. Nick notices numbers on his shirt, and he shoos them off. He then looks for Champ as well.
Champ?
Nick Meets the Cybermessengers[]
Drywell and Mort-Ray are flying along the highway carrying data packages, until they notice Nick. When they notice him, Nick gulps, and is reminded of something...
This looks like that game of Albert's. Is this a trick?!
Nick then introduces himself to Drywell and Mort-Ray.
My name is Nick Walker, and I'm lost. Do you have a telephone so I can call home?
Telephone?
Drywell and Mort-Ray laugh about the idea of a telephone, and Nick is trying to remember the incident from earlier.
Maybe I hit my head when the lights went out. Maybe if I hit my head again...
He does just that, and Drywell and Mort-Ray are conversing in their native language.
Do you speak English?
Drywell and Mort-Ray don't respond and continue talking to each other. Nick overhears their conversation and thinks about whatever language they are talking in.
I need to pay more attention in Spanish class...they're probably speaking Spanish.
Goobish, actually.
Drywell takes Nick's shoe.
Give me back my shoe!
Drywell and Mort-Ray are playing catch with Nick's shoe. Nick tries to reach for it, but to no avail.
I need that shoe!
Drywell then kicks Nick's shoe so high that it ends up in the black hole. We then see Twipsy, who is flying along the highway. He then stops to notice Nick, who is looking at his other shoe.
Huh?
Hey, human! I mean, what are you doing on the Information Highway? Who invited you to cyberspace?
Huh?
You have your own world. What are you doing in ours?!
Your world?
You know, the internet? Email? The World Wide Web? Where do you think you are, Kansas?
Nick is suspicious about Twipsy, seeing as he only just met him.
Nick is in the Computer![]
In the real world, Albert and Lissie are looking all over the room for Nick. As it happens, Nick's shoe appears on the computer monitor, and Lissie takes notice of this.
Nick's shoe! He's in the...computer!
Albert goes to the computer and starts typing.
Here-here's what I think happened. When I invented that computer game, it must've created a door to cyberspace. So then, when the lights went off, the gravitational field around the computer somehow charged...in a way that separated the subatomic particles which pulled Nick into cyberspace!
My brother will do anything to get out of doing homework.
Just then, Stan comes home.
Lissie! Nick! We're home!
Now what?!
Now what? Now I go home!
Lissie turns Albert back over to the computer.
Don't! Count on it!
Tour of Cyberspace[]
Nick and Twipsy are walking along the highway, and Twipsy introduces himself to Nick.
I'm Twipsy, in case you are wondering.
I wasn't.
I'm made up of pure energy, which means I'm fast! And I never have to eat or sleep! I'm very strong! Wanna see me throw you down here so fast you can travel at the speed of light?
Maybe another time. I have track practice after school today.
How fast can you move?
I clocked the 6 minute 22 second mile!
You call that fast? Around here, we call that crawling! Let's move it. I'll show you around the place.
Twipsy picks up Nick and starts flying while showing him what cyberspace is like.
Whoa! Whoa!
